Realizzato con mezzi visibilmente modesti, e' un film d'avventura diventato un divertente documento d'epoca. Da vedere solo per Laughton che gigioneggia a briglia sciolta. Il vero Capitan Kidd – William Kidd (1645-1701) – era un sarto scozzese che, dopo aver fatto la guerra in mare contro i francesi e la pirateria per conto dei governatori britannici delle colonie americane, nel 1697 si mise in proprio. Arrestato e processato, fu impiccato a Londra il 23 maggio 1701, protestando sino all'ultimo la sua innocenza.
