Giovani reclute provenienti dalle piu' diverse condizioni di vita si arruolano per entrare a far parte del Secondo battaglione Incursori dei Marines.
Attraverso un durissimo addestramento e sotto il comando del colonnello Thorwald (che ha fatto proprio il detto cinese ''Gung Ho!'' (Gung-Lavoro, Ho-Armonia), comprenderanno l'importanza dello spirito di gruppo e saranno pronti ad affrontare l'immenso esercito giapponese per liberare l'isola di Makin.
Nel 1943 gli USA sono in Seconda Guerra Mondiale: un fervente patriottismo esplode nel paese.
Holliwood non sta a guardare e produce questo kolossal bellico per celebrare l'eroismo dell'esercito nel contrattaccare i giapponesi dopo la strage di Pearl Harbour.
Nel cast, oltre alla star dell’epoca Randolph Scott, è presente anche un giovanissimo Robert Mitchum nella parte della recluta 'Pig-Iron' Matthews.
