Christopher Reeve non si e' limitato a indossare il mantello dell'eroe del copione per la quarta volta, in questo caso ha anche contribuito a sviluppare il provocatorio tema del film: il disarmo nucleare.
Per agevolare i trafficanti di armi nucleari, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) da' vita a una creatura che possa rivaleggiare con l'uomo di ferro: il radioattivo Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow).
I due avversari si scontrano in un'esplosione di scene strabilianti che vedranno Superman salvare la Statua della Liberta', provocare un'eruzione dell'Etna e ricostruire la Grande Muraglia cinese.
